About Thornhill

Thornhill is unique in the GTA — it straddles two municipalities, with the western portion in Vaughan (York Region) and the eastern portion in Markham (also York Region), split roughly along Yonge Street. This geographic quirk gives the community distinctive character: Yonge Street in Thornhill is a true village main street with independent shops and restaurants, while the residential streets to either side offer large lots and family homes.

The neighbourhood has a significant Jewish community, reflected in the concentration of synagogues, kosher restaurants and delis, and Jewish day schools along Yonge and Clark Avenue. Promenade Mall serves as a regional shopping hub. The community is also home to a large Persian population, creating a rich food scene. Highway 407 provides east-west access, and the planned Yonge North subway extension will eventually bring rapid transit directly to Thornhill.
